Highland Tour Day 1

This morning we started on our weekend tour to the Isle of Skye; when we started off we were finally getting some of the classic Scottish rain, but it cleared up as we went north so we could see all the mountains and lochs lining the roads. I definitely don’t remember all the names of the mountains we stopped at, but I do know that on the way we drove through the Loch Lommond & Trossachs National Park, and Glenco, and saw the Three Sisters, Glenfinnan Viaduct (Harry Potter bridge), and Eileen Donan Castle. Oh, and I finally saw my Highland cows! We stayed at a hostel in Stromeferry; pretty janky – we could only have power on either the first or second floor and (spoiler  alert) the second night the showers stopped working all together, but you get what you pay for and we were pretty much only there to sleep.

Cork

Our good luck with the weather finally ran out and we couldn’t go out until the afternoon today, so we only made it to Blarney Castle. Ended up being a lot more there to explore though; I saw signs for “Jurassic Fern Park” and obviously had to wander around there for a good long while.

Train to Munich

Spent most of the day on the 7 hour train ride which was a new experience for me and everything went very smoothly so it was very good. When we got to Munich we went to the Hofbräuhaus beer hall where we had some very good wiener schnitzel and strudel. It began raining while we were there so we went back to the hotel and called it an early night.

Cruise

Set out for our day cruise today where we laid out on the front of the boat soaking in the sun. On the first island, Aegina, there was a beach near the port so a bunch of us went swimming for about an hour and a half or so which was really fun. It seemed that there was more time spent on the boat to get to the other islands – Hydra and Poros – than there was actually on the islands, but we at least got to wander around a little bit. On Poros there were lots of cats and donkeys which were pretty fun to see. On the about 3 hour long boat ride back to Athens, I lathered on sunscreen in hopes that eventually I might tan a little bit, but even after many reapplications, I got so burned :(. It was a really fun day though, and when we got back we walked around in the rain to get another gyro.

Last VBS

Last day here with the kids. 🙁 We did a new skit at all 3 schools and played with them. It started raining early today, so we hung out in the church. Then we went to the micro loan ladies and I got a really awesome bracelet. We also played outside with the lightning bugs.

VBS

We did our own VBS at schools today and it was really fun; I love all the kids! We went to Pastor Valario’s church service, but it was raining really hard so there was only one other person there. There was one thunder that rolled on for a really long time. After hanging out at the church for a while, we rode back to our hostiles in the back of the pickup truck with a tarp over it! It was quite fun and scary at the same time.

Grand Canyon>Lake Powell

We got up at 4 am to watch the sunrise. After going back to sleep for about 6 hours, we hiked down into the Grand Canyon a little bit. Then we drove to Lake Powell. After we parked there was a storm with lots of dust, rain, and wind.
