St. Andrews

Day trip to St. Andrews; luckily we missed the chaos of the big open last week, but there were still some tents set up in a field and you could see the patches of grass where the other hundred tents were. I had an amazing strawberry tart (and hot chocolate) for breakfast; we mostly just walked around shopping and wandering on the beach since none of us could really care less about golf (though literally every other store was a golf store). I did almost have to throw hands with a seagull as it swooped down to get my crumbs as I went to the trash can – I literally almost punched it in the beak before it would leave me alone.

Cruise

Set out for our day cruise today where we laid out on the front of the boat soaking in the sun. On the first island, Aegina, there was a beach near the port so a bunch of us went swimming for about an hour and a half or so which was really fun. It seemed that there was more time spent on the boat to get to the other islands – Hydra and Poros – than there was actually on the islands, but we at least got to wander around a little bit. On Poros there were lots of cats and donkeys which were pretty fun to see. On the about 3 hour long boat ride back to Athens, I lathered on sunscreen in hopes that eventually I might tan a little bit, but even after many reapplications, I got so burned :(. It was a really fun day though, and when we got back we walked around in the rain to get another gyro.

Volcanic Crater

We got to go to a black sand beach (Punaluu), where I attempted to walk barefoot, but that only lasted about 30 seconds. We went to a volcanic crater and while we waited for the sunset we hiked through some caves nearby.

We watched the sunset at the crater and after dark you could see the lava glowing and it would come up the sides, which is apparently pretty rare!

Kiholo Bay, Hiking Adventure

We went hiking today over beaches and huge lava rocks to get to a lagoon. On the way, we saw a tiny fish out of the water, so I picked it up and put it back in the water, but I think it was too late. There were also a bunch of goats, and we had a great back and forth conversation. At the lagoon, there wasn’t good snorkeling, but there were a lot of turtles; I was able to get up super close and get pictures with them. One of them actually looked at me and acknowledged me, so after our bonding session, I named him Charles. On the way back, Daddy and I found a baby coconut. Then, watched the sunset and I got a bug bite on my forehead (but Momma slapped my head so it wasn’t too bad).

Celebrating 4th of July

Today we went to Anaehoomalu Beach, but I decided to take a break from getting sunburned, so I, along with Momma and Aunt Robin, stayed in the shade reading while the boys snorkeled. Then we went to Waikoloa Bowl to watch fireworks. They had live music, but the opening band was a lot better than the one the main stage one.

Snorkeling & Mauna Kea

We went to a beach which had really good snorkeling. I saw 2 sea turtles there too, and the second one almost bumped into me! We then went up to the tallest mountain, Mauna Kea. It was really cool to see the clouds below us. There was also super good stargazing, including a constellation of  across that can only be seen from 2 places in the United States: Hawaii and Florida.

Kaloko Honokohau

Saw 4 sea turtles on a beach today! And we went to our real condo which is pretty fancy. We also watched a little hula demonstration which was pretty cool.

Surfing

We got to go to the beach and learn how to surf and boogie board! Surfing was painful since the board kept hitting me in the stomach. One time it flipped over my head and I couldn’t get it off until the next wave came. I also wasn’t able to stand up because it was too slippery. You might say I’m not that good at the whole surfing thing! But at least I was good at boogie boarding, and that was a lot more fun too! It might be because the board was not as painful hitting me in the stomach the first few times.

After our lessons, we took a walk along the beach where I got lots of cool seashells and rocks! Then we ate dinner and went on another walk to go shopping.

Brisbane Beach & Aquarium

We ate a really good breakie (breakfast) in a restaurant by our hotel and the toast and eggs were really good! When we got on the bus, we found little clip-on koalas on our seats that Jeff (the coach driver) bought us. Then we went to a mall to buy everything that we forgot or lost. We made a little surprise stop on to the beach on our way and played in the water, made sand castles and played in the rain. There was a pirate play-set at the top of the beach that we played on too! The girls had taken it over but didn’t even follow the dying rules in our game. But even still, the Resistance took it over.

After our fun at the beach, we went to the aquarium. We got to watch otters swim around (they came out just for us), feed fish and turtles with peas and shrimp and watch a seal show. We also got to pet a huge cricket (I did not), hermit crabs, starfish and a baby turtle. Our guide for feeding the fish and feeling the starfish was really funny. When I was feeding some turtles and ran out of peas, I was walking toward him to get more, I smelled my hands and said, “My hand smells like pea.” He started making fun of me for it but he could tell I didn’t mind because I was laughing my head off! He’s name was Warren. He was a funny guy, but I think his accent made him funnier!
